Orillia, ON – After six months of Canadians voting for their favourite Shell FuellingChange projects, we are pleased to announce that the Georgian Bay Turtle Hospital has been chosen to receive a grant of $50,000 from Shell Canada.
The Georgian Bay Turtle Hospital, which has been struggling to become a functional rehabilitation centre, will use the grant to develop and equip recovery holding tanks, an egg incubation area, treatment, an office, storage spaces, and other necessary features.
The Georgian Bay watershed is home to some of the best remaining populations of Ontario’s turtle species, but with increasing road networks and traffic levels, the risk of nesting females being hit by cars is high. Since road mortality is the greatest threat to turtle populations, the treatment and release of injured turtles can make a big difference! The Georgian Bay Turtle Hospital hopes to duplicate the success of the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre (KTTC) in Peterborough, where injured turtles are currently treated. The Georgian Bay Turtle Hospital will provide turtles with a local treatment option. With nesting season about to start, we remind everyone to watch out for turtles on the road. We hope to be ready to receive injured turtles soon, but in the meantime, turtles will still be sent to the KTTC.
Over the past three years FuellingChange has helped worthy organizations from across Canada take positive strides towards improving our environment. Shell has donated $6 million dollars in grants since May 2011 in support of unique and innovative projects that are changing our world for the better.
“The great thing about FuellingChange is that it empowered not-for-profit organizations’ efforts in realizing their environmental goals, says Shell Canada’s President and Country Chair, Lorraine Mitchelmore. “Congratulations to the successful organizations and thank you to our customers for voting and letting us know what environmental projects they care about.”
