The Kelsey’s Wings recently defeated Tiff’s 7-2 to secure The Orillia Over 30 Hockey Championship. Defensive stalwart Andrew Morris got The Wings off to a quick start with an early tally. Brett “T-Bear” Thibert, promoted to the top line for the playoffs didn’t disappoint, as he unleashed a twisted wrister short side to bury the second goal of the game. The Wings found themselves in penalty trouble late in the first and final period, trying to fend off a relentless Tiff’s attack and surrendered their two goal lead shortly into the final period. Wings goalie, Sean Smith, put on a goaltending clinic from that point on, holding The Wings in the game while facing an onslaught of rubber from Tiff’s shooters. The Wings fortunes then changed as Johnny Kerr, who was mired in a prolific playoff scoring slump, was the recipient of a fortuitous rebound and slide home the game winner. Bob Kennedy then threw a sweet saucer between the defense and sprung Andrew Hawke on a breakaway, who went bar down to add an insurance goal. Not to be outdone, Wings perennial leading scorer Paul Elvins went coast-to-coast like butter on toast, finishing with a backhand top shelf, in highlight reel fashion. Team captain and hardnosed winger Doug Noganosh and first year standout Jeff Shanks added a little hot sauce to the victory with late goals.
Tom Earle (pictured hoisting the trophy) was named team Rookie-Of-The-Year and Playoff MVP, contributing four assists in the final, while playing on a shutdown defensive pairing with wily veteran Rob Street. Also skating to the victory and adding two assists a piece were fellow Wings Greg Elvins, David McLeod, and Brock Robertson, while healthy scratches Matt Burns and Jeff Hunter watched from the press box. Player/Coach Jeff Morris, who didn’t let his minus two on the night spoil the victory, put his on ice struggles aside and said he was just happy to hoist the trophy at the end of the night and celebrate with the tight knit group. Jeff wanted to send out thanks, on behave of the team, to Kelsey’s for sponsoring the team for another season and ensuring the squad always had delicious wings and ice cold pints ready after the game!
