For 25 years, students at Georgian College have been doing their part -- and urging members of the community to do the same -- to help make life easier for those with cystic fibrosis.
The most common of fatal genetic diseases affecting young Canadians is the target of the annual Shinerama, which is taking place today in various parts of the Sunshine City.
For students at Georgian's Orillia campus, the day will begin with a pancake breakfast before they watch a video about cystic fibrosis.
Between 10:30 a. m. and 2 p. m., students will be washing cars for donations at the following locations: Davenport Subaru (West Street South), Montana's (West Ridge), the former Jim Wilson car dealership building (Memorial Avenue), Foodland (corner of Fittons and Laclie streets), Country Produce (corner of Coldwater Road and Westmount Drive), Metro (Front Street) and Georgian College (Memorial Avenue).
Students will also be walking downtown, asking for donations.
"If someone asks them to do a jig, they'll do a jig -- whatever it takes for donations," said Jordan Atkinson, vice-president internal with the Students' Administrative Council.
Last year's event raised $3,800 for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the goal this year is $4,000.
Atkinson is urging the community to once again show support for the cause.
"There's no cure for cystic fibrosis. The phrase that is said to most commonly describe what it's like to have cystic fibrosis is that it feels like you're drowning," she said. "(The fundraiser) is about giving them a chance at life, which is what they deserve."
