Several hundred athletes from Orillia and area elementary schools competed Wednesday in the Simcoe County Area Cross Country Running Championship at Mount St. Louis Moonstone.

In persistent rain and chilly temperatures, the young athletes battled the elements as they raced the muddy, hilly course in Oro-Medonte. Depending on the age group, the runners navigated two- or three-kilometre courses and were cheered on by teammates, friends and family members, many of whom were soaked despite trying to peer out from under umbrellas.

Competitors raced in girls and boys divisions in Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8. Top performers from each group will move on to compete in next week's Simcoe County-wide championship.
