The Sun City Swim returns next month to help some of the most vulnerable victims in the region.

The Child Advocacy Centre Simcoe/Muskoka (CACSM) is once again hosting the fundraising swim. Taking place Aug. 12, swimmers will participate in a 4km open water swim across Lake Couchiching, beginning at Fern Resort and ending at Couchiching Beach.

The CACSM is committed to the well-being of vulnerable children and youth that have been victims of violence.

“We're here to support children and families who are going through to process of reporting child abuse, whether it's physical or sexual,” explained Jill Dunlop, marketing and fundraising associate for CACSM.

Particularly in the small community such as Orillia, child abuse is a crime many would like to pretend never occurs. The reality shows otherwise.

“Unfortunately, it does happen more than we want to admit,” she added. “It's great that we can provided the services to the families that are going through the processes of the interviewing and the courts, as well as some of the resources in the community afterward.”

Those resources include the external agencies in the region that provide hands-on help to the victims, such as counselling and therapy.

Since 2014, the Orillia centre has provided assistance to police and child protection services in more than 550 forensic interviews of child sexual or physical abuse. As well, preventive workshops have been organized, including a social media/sexual consent/sexting workshop that had more than 15,000 students participate.
