Crews from the county and the province were hard at work Monday, trying to get a stretch of road repaired just west of Coldwater.

A short stretch of Vasey Road, near Highway 400, was damaged Sunday as a result of drainage issues, said Astrid Poei, communications co-ordinator with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

While the portion of the road in question is primarily under MTO jurisdiction, as it the southern junction of Highway 12 and Highway 400, the drainage issues stem from a ditch that is under Simcoe County jurisdiction Poei said.

The county was also looking into what happened.

"We are currently working with the MTO to repair damage to the road and shoulder that resulted from the heavy rainfall on Sunday," wrote Christian Meile, director of transportation and engineering for the county, in an email.

"We continue to have discussions with the MTO regarding this section of road, planned future repairs and improved storm water drainage which has been a concern for this area in the past," he added.

It was hoped by Tuesday, through traffic could go back to using the road.

"End of day, but that is also weather permitting," Poei said in an interview Monday. "If everything holds... there's no rain or anything, we can open lanes, and that's what we're aiming to do.

"We're still going to have to do further work later this week," she continued, adding "lane restrictions and shoulder closures" would be necessary to complete that work.

The county also had some road damage to contend with and was equally cautiously optimistic.

"The county's section, which has less extensive damage, requires shoulder material/regrading and ditch reinstatement," Meile wrote. "The ministry contractor is currently on site; providing equipment and materials can be quickly available, the road may be open by the end of the day today."

The damage was found primarily to the west of the southbound Highway 400 overpass. There was no threat to the integrity of the bridge carrying highway traffic, Poei said.

During the closure, southbound Highway 400 motorists travelling to Coldwater or Orillia are encouraged to exit at the Highway 12/Simcoe Road 16 interchange near Waubaushene. Motorists needed to head west on Vasey Road should exit at Moonstone Road and travel north on Oro-Medonte Line 9.
