Participate in Giving Tuesday
United Way Simcoe Muskoka (UWSM) urges widespread participation in this year's Giving Tuesday event on Nov. 29.
"While donations can take place any time of year, Giving Tuesday - with its emphasis on collective participation - is an opportunity to recognize and support our favourite charities," said UWSM CEO Dale Biddell, whose organization prioritizes poverty reduction, inclusive communities and furthering children and youth potential. "This is a movement we can all get behind."
Initiated in Canada by CanadaHelps and GIV3 in 2013, GivingTuesday follows the two retail-bargain days Black Friday and Cyber Monday to encourage giving back. Although Canada was one of the first countries to join the Giving Tuesday initiative outside the U.S., it's not the only one. The event has become a global movement with participation in more than 70 countries, as of the end of last year (up from 43 countries the year before).
United Way Simcoe Muskoka, which recently changed its name to better represent the region it supports, is launching its #UWSmileStory campaign on Giving Tuesday 2016. The campaign showcases first-person profiles of local residents helped by UWSM donor dollars. The stories can be found at UWSimcoeMuskoka.ca.
