Saturday evening structure fire in Oro-Medonte
Flames are seen coming out of the roof of a business on 15-16 Sideroad in Oro-Medonte Saturday evening.
Investigators are still trying to determine how an eastern Oro-Medonte business caught fire Saturday night.
Emergency crews were called to Moonstone Mechanical on 15-16 Sideroad just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday, after receiving 9-1-1 calls describing smoke coming from the commercial structure. When crews arrived at the scene, between Line 13 and Line 14, smoke was visible from the roof, but no flames were showing.
That changed about 25 minutes later. Flames could be seen coming out of the building, as smoke grew thicker in the surrounding area, clearly visible along Highway 11, despite the ever-strengthening wet snow-rain mix.
"Fire at 2251 15/16 Sideroad is currently under investigation with the Office of the Fire Marshal," read an emailed statement from the fire department, issued by Samah Othman, the township's supervisor of communications and customer service. "Oro-Medonte firefighters from Stations 2, 3 and 4 attended, with tankers from all six stations as well as a mutual aid tanker from Severn Township."
The email did not indicate if the fire is believed to be suspicious in nature, nor did it release an estimated cost of the damage.
The fire at Moonstone Mechanical was the second commercial fire in three days that Oro-Medonte firefighters had to fight. The first, Thursday, was just 500 metres from Saturday's blaze.
A fire at Brain's Taxidermy, just off of Line 14 at Highway 11, caused between $500,000 and $600,000 in damage. The cause remains undetermined at this time and the property has been released to the owners.
