Murder Mystery Tour at Manticore Books Sunday
If you’re into mystery novels, Manticore Books is the place to be Sunday at 1 p.m.
A quartet of Canadian crime writers will be on hand with their latest releases at Manticore (103 Mississaga St. E.) as part of a cross-Canada event called the Murder Mystery Tour.
Robert Rotenberg, whose Old City Hall was the Orillia Public Library’s selection for Orillia Reads in 2010, will be reading from his new book, Stranglehold; Ian Hamilton has Scottish Banker of Surabaya; Hilary Davidson has The Next One to Fall; and Robin Spano will read from Death’s Last Run.
The authors will all read from their books as well as sign copies during the gathering.
The Next One to Fall: Travel writer Lily Moore has been persuaded by her closest friend, photographer Jesse Robb, to visit Peru with him. Jesse is convinced the trip will lure Lily out of her dark mood, but Lily is still haunted by the death of her sister. At Machu Picchu, the famous Lost City of the Incas, they discover a woman clinging to life at the bottom of an ancient stone staircase. Just before the woman dies, she tells Lily the name of the man who pushed her.
When local police investigate, the forensic evidence they find doesn’t match what Lily knows. Unable to accept the official ruling of accidental death, Lily hunts down the wealthy man who was the dead woman’s travelling companion and discovers a pattern of dead and missing women in his wake.
Obsessed with getting justice for these women, Lily sets in motion a violent chain of events that will have devastating consequences.
Stranglehold: Bestselling author Robert Rotenberg is back with his most shocking book yet, featuring Det. Ari Greene in the fight of his life.
It’s just after Labour Day and the city is kicking back into gear. All eyes are on the hotly contested election for Toronto’s next mayor and crime is the big issue. Greene is no stranger to the worst of what the city has to offer, but even he is unprepared for what happens next when he stumbles upon a horrific homicide.
In one nightmare moment, his world is flipped upside down. Soon he is pitted against his young protégé, Daniel Kennicott, who arrests him for first-degree murder.
Tied down on house arrest as he awaits his trial, Greene has to find a way to not only clear his name, but to face some very hard truths: that he didn’t really know the people he believed in most; that there are unseen forces at work prepared to see him take the fall; and, most of all, that he should never underestimate the price people will pay for love.
Stranglehold is Rotenberg's fourth gripping mystery set on the streets and in the courtrooms of Toronto, capturing audiences with his masterful knowledge of the intricacies of the criminal justice system and understanding of the emotions that make people tick.
The Scottish Banker of Surabaya: The fifth instalment in the wildly popular Ava Lee series, The Scottish Banker of Surabaya exposes the dark world of money laundering and the Italian mob.
Ava begins an investigation into what she thinks is a Ponzi scheme. The trail leads her to a bank in Indonesia that is run by a Scot, but in actuality is a front for an elaborate money-laundering operation for Italian mobsters.
The relationship between Ava and the Scotsman turns nasty and personal.
Meanwhile, Uncle’s health problems become apparent.
Death’s Last Run: A young snowboarder turns up dead on the Blackcomb Glacier.
The local police are calling it suicide, but the victim’s mother, a U.S. senator, is not convinced. At the senator’s request, the FBI sends in undercover agent Clare Vengel to infiltrate the world of ski bums and snow bunnies and find out what happened to Sacha.
Clare soon discovers that not only was the victim involved in an LSD-smuggling ring, but also the unco-operative top cop in town is in cahoots with the smugglers.
With her cover dangerously close to being blown, Clare must solve the case before she finds herself in the deep freeze permanently.
