An Orillia man charged in the death of a small dog found in an Coldwater Road parking lot two days before Christmas was sentenced to 14 months in prison Tuesday.

The body of a three-year-old brown pug/shih tzu cross was discovered in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 17 Coldwater Rd. W. with signs of trauma at around 11 a.m. Dec. 23.

Steve McGinn, 20, was arrested Jan. 3. He has been charged with breaking and entering, killing/injuring an animal and breach of probation.

Police said McGinn was not the dog’s owner. The owner lived at a nearby Albert Street North address.

McGinn is charged with assaulting a man on the same evening as the dog death, though police said the two incidents were unrelated.

He has also been sentenced to two years of probation and was banned from owning animals for five years.
