Orillia Wind Ensemble Winter Concert Feb. 16
The Orillia Wind Ensemble (OWE) is gearing up for its Winter Concert, which will take place Feb. 16 at St. Paul’s United Church at 7:30 p.m.
The concert will feature smaller ensemble and solo acts from within the group.
Erika Broughton on flute, Hugh Coleman on clarinet, Rodger Archer on trombone and Kirsten Smith on sax will each be doing a solo turn, accompanied by the band, while the trombones and flutes will have their full sections featured in some pieces as well.
“This is a great way to show off the talent of these individual players from within the OWE,” said music director Roy Menagh. “Having been in existence over 25 years, the OWE members’ musicianship has increased substantially. We thought it was time to showcase this to our audience.”
Last year’s concert was the first time the band had decided to showcase smaller groups, and that concert was such an audience favourite, the decision was made to showcase them again this year.
The trombones were the newest section to decide to do an ensemble piece, made possible by the addition of a couple of new players in the section, and the group is excited to show off their chops.
The concert will feature a diverse variety of music, including Pie Jesu, the theme from Silverado, and medleys from Mancini and Stevie Wonder, along with much more.
Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and $5 for students and can be purchased in advance at the Orillia Opera House box office (705-326-8011) or at the door at St. Paul’s on the night of the show.
The concert is being sponsored by Roy and Nancy Menagh along with Brady Aubin and Sandra Stanton. The OWE is grateful for their support.
