Severn man dies in snowmobile crash
A Severn Township man died Friday evening after a snowmobile crash.
In a press release issued Monday, Orillia OPP said the collision occurred on a groomed trail between Southorn Road and Dunns Line in Severn. The incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m.
The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit is assisting with the investigation.
As a result of the collision, 49-year-old Tracey Beers, of Severn, died. He was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle.
A post-mortem has been conducted and the investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing.
Orillia OPP Const. Jim Edwards said Beers was pronounced dead at the scene. He said the 911 call was made by another snowmobiler in the area.
The Orillia District Snowmobile Club (ODSC) acknowledged the incident on its website.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the snowmobiler we lost in (Friday’s) accident near Coldwater,” the statement reads. “He left a wife and three children behind. Please be careful and ride responsibly.”
ODSC president Rob Love said the loss was felt by the area’s snowmobilers.
“It’s unfortunate,” Love told The Packet & Times. “It’s a (tough) loss for everybody in the (snowmobiling) community.”
While snowmobiling is a “relatively safe” activity, “you’re still dealing with high-powered motorized vehicles,” Love noted.
