Catholic board awards $7.8M tender for new Orillia school
A $7.8-million tender for the construction of the new Monsignor Lee Catholic School in Orillia has been awarded to D. Grant and Sons Ltd.
Trustees voted to award the tender at the Nov. 30 Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board meeting. With the awarding of the construction contract finalized, officials said the project is on track for a fall 2012 opening.
"This is great news for our school community," Monsignor Lee principal Paul Campbell said in a statement. "We at Monsignor Lee will be very excited to welcome Guardian Angels families to our new school next fall as we journey together towards our new facility."
The school will accommodate up to 354 students.
There will be 11 classrooms, a special-needs room, a resource room, a new gymnasium and library, and four kindergarten rooms.
The kindergarten spaces are being built to reflect the new full-day learning program requirements.
Student safety is also a key consideration, as the design includes a "kiss 'n' ride" parent drop-off and pickup lane that is separate from the bus lane. There is also an enhanced parking area.
